2: Ocean City Beach

Ocean City Beach SUP
While most of New Jersey’s coastline is dominated by beaches, one of the go-to spots for surfers is Ocean City Beach. Much of the state’s surfers gather in Ocean City throughout the year for competitions, making it a great place to see how your skills stack up.

If you want a fun place to cruise with friends, you can view or listen to many of the events hosted in the city from the water. One of the most popular and unique events you can take part in is the Ocean City Night in Venice, a water vessel parade that goes from the Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. Decorate your paddleboard and take part in one of New Jersey’s most popular traditions off of Ocean City Beach!

3: Lake Hopatcong

Lake Hopatcong SUP
Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater lake in New Jersey, with 2,560 square acres and over 50 miles of shoreline, though you’ll want to go to one of the official launch points due to the private properties located on the lake. New Jersey keeps the lake well stocked for tourists and local fauna, with Trout, Brook, and Herring, and Muskellunge a few of the more popular catches.

Outside of fishing, racing is a popular sport on the lake, though by sticking to the shore, you’ll have some shallow, tranquil water for beginner paddlers or practicing yoga. Depending on the annual rainfall, Lake Hopatcong’s depth can vary greatly, so visit it when you can for a unique paddleboarding experience.

4: Monksville Reservoir

Monksville Reservoir SUP
Located in northern New Jersey, Monksville Reservoir was created following the flooding of the nearby Monksville community. While only 505 acres large, the reservoir’s calm and friendly waters, along with its location, has made it a popular training and competition spot. SEAS, or the Society for the Education of American Sailors, practices on this lake, as do several other fishing rowing, and sporting clubs and organizations.

Some of the state’s largest Walleye, Bass, and Trout can be caught at this lake, though its calm waters make it just as popular for yogis wanting to practice their asanas on the water. If you want to meet some new people and make some paddling friends, you’ll be able to do it quickly at Monksville Reservoir in New Jersey.

5: Lake Lenape

Lake Lenape SUP

Lake Lenape is the most beginner and family-friendly paddleboarding destination in New Jersey. It is part lake and part river cutting through Mays Landing. These shallow waters make it an excellent location for paddlers learning to get their feet wet.

At the same time, the state-managed park also lets you get close and personal to local wildlife without having to leave civilization. Bald Eagles are known to rest and migrate here in the winter, and Raccoons, Foxes, and Deer come right to the shoreline.

For more of a challenge, you can go on a touring adventure to Wilson’s Landing for some easier river navigation or go up north for some Class II and III rapids. Paddlers of all skill levels who want to paddle without traveling far can enjoy the water by paddling on Lake Lenape.
