This board is ready to fish.
We love SUPs for fishing because they add another level of soulfulness to the sport.
There is no better way, aside from a kayak maybe, to navigate shallow waters without making noise or disturbing nearby wildlife and schools of fish beneath the surface.
Catching a fish on a SUP makes it a true sport, with balance, agility and technique all coming into play when you try to reel in your catch.
The Blue Heron
The Jimmy Styks Blue Heron 12ft is a great platform to fish from. At 12′ long and 33″ wide, it provides the stability you need to cast and reel from your board.
It is also maneuverable for its size, enabling you to navigate chop, narrow waterways and coastal features. As a stable beginner board, it will accommodate paddlers up to 310 lbs.
However, if you’re really looking for a light weight maneuverable board, the Blue Heron might not be the best choice. At 39.5 lbs, it is relatively heavy for an all-arounder SUP.
Along with stability, a fishing SUP needs to provide gear storage options. The Blue Heron comes equipped with bungee ties and extra attachment plugs so you can add gear, such as a cooler, tackle box, rod or rod holder.
- LENGTH 12’0″ (366 cm)
- WIDTH 33″ (83.8 cm)
- THICKNESS 5″ (12.7 cm)
- NOSE ROCKER 6.5″ (16.5 cm)
- TAIL ROCKER 2″ (5.1 cm)
- BOARD WEIGHT 39.5 Lbs.
- VOLUME 253.8 Liters
- WEIGHT LIMIT: 310 lbs (Novice)
Available from West Marine, this board also comes with the full package – adjustable paddle, leash, fin (and fin attachment parts), and board bag. Users of the Blue Heron have been very pleased with the accessories.
Live on a lake and my first paddleboard purchase. Extremely happy with the quality and versatility of the board. Very stable and ideal for beginners. I’m 230lbs and my wife is 160lbs. Easy for both of us to use and paddle around solo. When we both were on it though (way over the 320lb rating btw), it was harder to paddle but that was expected. We still got around and easily floated without too much effort. Sitting on it and enjoying the sun was relaxing.
Price point was great and also included a high quality adjustable carbon fiber paddle and other accessories.
I plan to outfit it for fishing by utilizing all the tie down spots for a cooler and rod holders.

More than just a fishing SUP
The Jimmy Styks Blue Heron is also more than suitable as an entry-level all purpose board. It’s also a great price point (under $1,000) for a beginner or family paddleboard. The Blue Heron can also be excellent yoga SUP due to its stability.
Overall, if you’re looking for something that is very stable and perfect for recreational use, this is a strong choice.
However, if you’re looking for a performance oriented, maneuverable paddleboard, this might be a little on the bulky side.
